CPT Code 97026 | Description, Procedure & Billing Guidelines (2022)

You can use CPT code 97026 for infrared light therapy to aid healing, promote circulation, increase joint mobility, or reduce pain.

1. What Is CPT Code 97026?

CPT 97026 covers an infrared light therapy procedure to;

  • aid healing;
  • promote circulation;
  • increase joint mobility; or
  • reduce pain.

This procedure can be performed by a massage therapist, physical therapist, physician, or others.

2. Description

The CPT book describes CPT 97026 as follows: “Application of a modality to 1 or more areas; infrared.”

3. Procedure

The provider begins with the 97026 CPT code procedure by attaching a probe with an infrared unit to the patient’s skin and underlying tissues.

The infrared unit on the probe used during infrared light therapy generates heat and can prevent inflammation and relieve pain.

The provider might use other therapies alongside infrared light therapy to treat different conditions the patient suffers from.

4. How To Use CPT Code 97026

Check the manufacturer’s recommendation before using CPT 97026 for infrared therapy. For example, Anodyne will instruct you to use 97026 for billing infrared treatment.

In most cases, this will be accepted by the payers but be aware that not all accept Anodyne for infrared therapy. For example, Palmetto does not recognize Anodyne as infrared, and because of that, you need to bill CPT 977999 instead of CPT 97026.

In the end, the payers will have the final say in how to bill the procedure, but the manufacturer’s recommendation can be a good starting point.

Ask the manufacturer of the infrared device about their SADMERC (Statistical Analysis Durable Medical Equipment Regional Carrier ) number. They must submit their SADMERC number to be reviewed before using a DME code.
