At Houston Methodist, the Inpatient Coder position is responsible for ensuring diagnostic and procedure codes are assigned accurately to inpatient encounters based upon documentation within the electronic medical record while maintaining compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines.
The role requires an associate's degree or higher in a CAHIIM accredited program or equivalent experience, along with one year of relevant inpatient coding experience or completion of specific coding programs. Certification such as RHIT, RHIA, or CCS from AHIMA is mandatory.
Key duties include reviewing medical record documentation, abstracting data accurately using electronic encoder applications and EHR systems, initiating physician queries for clarification, maintaining high coding quality standards in compliance with AHIMA guidelines, and supporting organizational accounts receivables goals. Strong communication and proficiency in coding classification systems, DRG/APC systems, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and common office software are also required.
The position involves collaboration within coding teams, providing feedback and education, and may require travel within and outside the Houston Metropolitan area. Work attire is business professional, and the role is non-exempt with no on-call requirement.
