The Coding Specialist II role supports professional billing coding operations at Northwestern Medicine. This position is responsible for abstracting medical records and assigning CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS procedure codes for more complex encounters, while ensuring documentation accuracy, charge capture, and compliant billing practices.
The role collaborates with providers, clinical teams, patient accounting, PB billing, and revenue cycle staff to resolve coding edits, correct billing issues, support appeals, and improve documentation quality. It also includes training physicians and staff on documentation, billing, and coding guidelines, along with maintaining high productivity and accuracy standards.
This is a remote position, but candidates must reside in IL, IN, IA, WI, OH, MO, MI, or FL.
Required
- RHIA, RHIT, CPC, or CCS certification
- 0-2 years of relevant experience
- 94% accuracy on the organization’s coding test
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree in a CAHIIM-accredited Health Information Management program
- Previous experience with physician coding
Key skills
- Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding
- Understanding of disease processes, anatomy and physiology, and pharmacology
