Coding and Billing Specialist

COUNTY OF CAYUGA

Responsible for specialized clerical work in the Community Mental Health Department involving outpatient medical coding, billing, charge reconciliation, and related revenue cycle tasks. The role ensures accuracy, compliance, and proper handling of patient billing information across Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, and self-pay accounts.

Key duties include:

  • Independently performing complex outpatient coding and charge reconciliation for psychiatric services
  • Monitoring daily revenue reports and patient schedules to verify complete and accurate payer information
  • Investigating and resolving charge and billing code issues
  • Reviewing compliance updates, coding journals, and modality newsletters
  • Verifying patient insurance information
  • Collecting, posting, and managing patient payments
  • Following up on insurance claims and preparing billing submissions
  • Maintaining statistical reports and using an electronic medical record system
  • Posting charges and payments
  • Supervising and participating in billing-related activities
Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus one of the following:
    • Associate degree from a regionally accredited or NYS-registered college or university in Health Information Technology or Medical Records Technology
    • Certification in coding and billing plus 1 year of experience in a medical setting performing billing tasks
    • 5 years of coding and billing experience in a medical setting

Required knowledge and skills

  • Knowledge of modern medical records and billing practices
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Understanding of medical record use and limitations
  • Knowledge of federal, state, departmental, and accrediting agency rules related to medical records information
  • Ability to maintain HIPAA confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to supervise others
  • Ability to build effective working relationships
