Responsible for assigning diagnoses and procedure codes for outpatient records to support the billing process and statistical database.
Performs daily review of the unbilled accounts report and works with Corporate Compliance and other hospital departments to ensure coding is based on complete and accurate documentation that reflects the patient's medical condition and severity.
Requirements & Qualifications
Required / Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- CPC or ability to obtain within the first year of employment required.
- CCA, CPC, COC, or RHIT required within 1 year of employment.
- Minimum 2 years of coding experience in an acute care setting preferred.
- Completion of an AHIMA-approved Accredited Record Technician course preferred.
- College-level coursework in anatomy, physiology, and related science courses preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of ICD-CM and CPT coding principles and guidelines.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and payer-specific regulations and compliance standards related to documentation, coding, and billing.
- Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism.
- Ability to work independently in a high-stress environment with frequent interruptions.
- Strong time management, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Proficiency with computers in a PC, Windows-based environment.
