The Clinical Documentation Specialist supports the Department of Radiation Oncology and Michigan Medicine by improving clinical documentation, coding accuracy, and revenue capture. This role provides education to faculty, APPs, and residents, helps identify documentation gaps, supports charge capture and denial prevention efforts, and partners with Revenue Cycle leadership to improve financial performance in both inpatient and ambulatory settings.
Key responsibilities include developing educational materials, reviewing charts and performance data, providing one-on-one and group education, monitoring documentation trends, assisting with audits and appeals, and promoting compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The position is hybrid and may involve both on-site and remote work.
Required qualifications
- Associate degree or equivalent
- At least 5 years of medical coding experience or equivalent related experience
- Current RHIT, RHIA, or CPC certification
- Extensive CPT and ICD-10 coding knowledge
- Working knowledge of CMS LCDs
- Familiarity with NCCI edits
- Strong medical terminology and clinical knowledge
- Ability to review documentation and determine needed support for accurate coding
- Ability to navigate the EHR and support clinicians with addendums, SmartTexts, SmartPhrases, and templates
- Demonstrated experience providing clinical documentation and coding education to providers
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and adapt to a changing healthcare environment
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- High attention to detail and accuracy
