An FQHC Medical Coding Specialist reviews patient records and assigns accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes to maximize reimbursement and ensure compliance with federal, state, and FQHC-specific regulations, including Medicaid and Medicare. The specialist identifies billing gaps, audits documentation for quality, and works with providers to improve coding accuracy.
Responsibilities include coding and auditing, reviewing electronic health records to ensure documentation supports medical and behavioral health charges, providing feedback to providers on documentation practices and coding guidelines, resolving coding errors that cause denied claims, and applying knowledge of FQHC payment models such as Medicaid PPS and Medicare FQHC PPS.
1-2 years of medical coding experience, preferably in a clinical setting.
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) from AAPC or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from AHIMA preferred or required.
Strong understanding of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and anatomy/physiology.
Proficiency with electronic health records, including eClinicalWorks, and Microsoft Office.
Detail-oriented with high accuracy in capturing services rendered.
Strong communication skills for discussing coding discrepancies with providers.
Problem-solving ability to research complex coding scenarios and meet regulatory requirements.
