The Coding Quality Specialist reports to the HIM Coding Education Manager and performs internal departmental coding reviews to support Coding Operations. This role contributes to coding education, training, pre-bill review, and cross-training for inpatient and outpatient hospital-based coding associates.
The position reviews coding accuracy across ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS, modifiers, POA assignment, principal and secondary diagnoses, procedural coding, discharge disposition, DRG/APC accuracy, query opportunities, and compliance-related documentation. The specialist also collaborates with coding managers, coding integrity, HIM, compliance, and clinical documentation teams to share feedback and support education initiatives.
Additional duties include trend analysis, assisting with targeted chart reviews, helping develop education workplans, and supporting production coding as needed to maintain current skills. The role is expected to maintain a 95% accuracy rate and can be performed in a remote setting with minimal supervision.
High school diploma or equivalent years of experience required.
Preferred education:
- Baccalaureate degree in Health Informatics or Health Information Management
- AHIMA-approved coding certificate program
Experience:
- Five or more years of inpatient and/or outpatient hospital-based coding experience in an acute care setting preferred
Required certifications, one of:
- RHIA
- RHIT
- CCS
- COC
- CPC
Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently in a remote environment are required.
