Patient Accounts Specialist I

MedStar Health is seeking an experienced Patient Accounts Specialist to join its Patient Accounting team, supporting non-governmental follow-up for MedStar Health hospitals in Washington, DC.

This role focuses on facility and physician claims follow-up, denial resolution, and appeals processing to help ensure timely and accurate reimbursement. The team works a mix of commercial, Blue Cross, HMO, MCO, Medicare Advantage, and Workers' Compensation payers. Team members perform follow-up on billed accounts with no payment or partial payment received and prepare written appeals for denials.

The work is performed in a team environment with dedicated payer assignments and cross-training as needed.

Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 1–2 years of experience in patient accounting, accounts receivable, or a related healthcare field, or an equivalent combination of experience and college education in accounting, finance, or healthcare administration

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Working knowledge of at least one payer application billing and/or collection process
  • Basic knowledge of UB-04 and Explanation of Benefits (EOB)
  • Some knowledge of medical terminology and CPT/ICD-10 coding
  • Strong communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with hospital registration and/or billing systems, personal computers, Microsoft Excel, and Word
  • Ability to type 35 words per minute

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and evaluate appeals
  • Follow up with payers to ensure timely claims resolution and reimbursement
  • Stay current on regulatory and payer-specific billing changes
  • Maintain daily performance benchmarks
  • Complete coding report updates and reconcile reports to SMS and posted information
  • Maintain departmental quality assurance standards within the established error rate
