MedStar Health is seeking a Coding Specialist III with experience in Plastics/Podiatric Surgery coding. This role ensures medical-professional services are coded accurately and completely in accordance with regulatory and payer requirements. The position supports reimbursement optimization, works with physicians on coding issues, maintains coding system integrity, and mentors junior coding staff.
Key responsibilities include:
- Abstracting and ensuring accuracy of diagnosis, procedure, patient demographics, and other required data elements
- Creating training and educational coding guidance for physicians and associates
- Maintaining billing, coding, and editing dictionaries in the billing system
- Reviewing complex coding cases, including surgical coding and co-surgery scenarios
- Identifying trends in documentation, edits, denials, and physician feedback
- Providing guidance on complex edit and appeal scenarios
- Recommending policy and procedural improvements for revenue enhancement
Requirements & Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Bachelor's degree preferred
- 5-7 years of medical-professional coding experience with demonstrated ability to work independently
- 2 years of experience leading others or leading a work stream
- Experience with computer systems for encoding and abstracting
- CPC (Certified Professional Coder) certification required
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to interact effectively with physicians, administrators, and associates
- Ability to work independently and practice self-direction
- Working knowledge of payer policies, CMS policies, and regulatory/compliance requirements
- Ability to work across specialty coding disciplines
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Basic computer skills preferred
