List With CPT Codes For Sleep Study | Short & Long Descriptions & Lay-Term

The CPT codes for sleep studies can be divided into four different chapters. pediatric polysomnography is a sleep study for children younger than 6, unattended sleep studies are sleep studies at home without the presence of a technologist, the specialty sleep testing covers sleep disorders and the last chapter covers the CPT codes for attended sleep studies.

1. CPT Codes for Pediatric Polysomnography

Pediatric Polysomnography is a type of sleep study specifically designed for children under the age of 6. It involves monitoring and recording various physiological parameters during sleep to diagnose sleep disorders. There are two CPT codes associated with this procedure.

1.1 CPT Code 95782

Lay-term: CPT code 95782 is used when a sleep study is performed on a child younger than 6 years old, with the monitoring of at least four additional parameters of sleep, under the supervision of a technologist.

Long description: Polysomnography younger than 6 years, sleep staging with 4 or more additional parameters of sleep, attended by a technologist.

Short description: Pediatric sleep study with 4+ parameters.

1.2. CPT Code 95783

Lay-term: The CPT 95783 procedure is used when a sleep study is performed on a child younger than 6 years old, with the monitoring of at least four additional parameters of sleep, and with the initiation of continuous positive airway pressure therapy or bi-level ventilation, under the supervision of a technologist.

Long description: Polysomnography younger than 6 years, sleep staging with 4 or more additional parameters of sleep, with initiation of continuous positive airway pressure therapy or bi-level ventilation, attended by a technologist.

Short description: Pediatric sleep study with CPAP/BiPAP initiation.

2. CPT Codes for Unattended Sleep Studies

Unattended Sleep Studies are sleep studies that are performed at home without the presence of a technologist. These studies record heart rate, oxygen saturation, and respiratory analysis. Three CPT codes can be used for Unattended Sleep Studies

2.1. CPT Code 95800

Lay-term: CPT code 95800 is used when a sleep study is performed at home, recording heart rate, oxygen saturation, and respiratory analysis.

Long description: Sleep study, unattended, simultaneous recording heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory analysis (eg, by airflow or peripheral arterial tone), and sleep time.

Short description: Unattended sleep study with heart rate, oxygen, and respiratory recording.

2.2. CPT Code 95801

Lay-term: CPT code 95801 is used when a sleep study is performed at home, recording at least heart rate, oxygen saturation, and respiratory analysis.

Long description: Sleep study, unattended, simultaneous recording minimum of heart rate, oxygen saturation, and respiratory analysis (eg, by airflow or peripheral arterial tone).

Short description: Unattended sleep study with minimum heart rate, oxygen, and respiratory recording.

2.3. CPT Code 95806

Lay-term: CPT code 95806 is used when a sleep study is performed at home, recording heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory airflow, and respiratory effort.

Long description: Sleep study, unattended, simultaneous recording of, heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory airflow, and respiratory effort.

Short description: Unattended sleep study with heart rate, oxygen, airflow, and effort recording.

3. CPT Codes for Specialty Sleep Testing

Specialty Sleep Testing includes procedures like actigraphy testing and multiple sleep latency or maintenance of wakefulness testing. These tests are used to diagnose and monitor certain sleep disorders. There are two CPT codes for Specialty Sleep Testing.

3.1. CPT Code 95803

Lay-term: CPT code 95803 is used when a provider performs actigraphy testing, which involves recording, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting a patient’s activity and rest cycles over a period of 72 hours to 14 consecutive days.

Long description: Actigraphy testing, recording, analysis, interpretation, and report (minimum of 72 hours to 14 consecutive days of recording).

Short description: Actigraphy testing.

3.2. CPT Code 95805

Lay-term: CPT code 95805 is used when a provider performs multiple sleep latency or maintenance of wakefulness testing. This involves recording, analyzing, and interpreting physiological measurements to assess a patient’s ability to fall asleep or stay awake.

Long description: Multiple sleep latency or maintenance of wakefulness testing, recording, analysis and interpretation of physiological measurements of sleep during multiple trials to assess sleepiness.

Short description: Multiple sleep latency or maintenance of wakefulness testing.

4. CPT Codes for Attended Sleep Studies

Attended Sleep Studies are sleep studies that are performed in a sleep lab under the supervision of a technologist. These studies record ventilation, respiratory effort, ECG or heart rate, and oxygen saturation. There are two CPT codes associated with this procedure.

4.1. CPT Code 95807

Lay-term: CPT code 95807 is used when a sleep study is performed in a sleep lab, recording ventilation, respiratory effort, ECG or heart rate, and oxygen saturation, under the supervision of a technologist.

Long description: Sleep study, simultaneous recording of ventilation, respiratory effort, ECG or heart rate, and oxygen saturation, attended by a technologist.

Short description: Attended sleep study with ventilation, effort, ECG/heart rate, and oxygen recording.

4.2. CPT Code 95808

Lay-term: CPT code 95808 is used when a polysomnography is performed on a patient of any age, with sleep staging and 1-3 additional parameters of sleep, under the supervision of a technologist.

Long description: Polysomnography any age, sleep staging with 1-3 additional parameters of sleep, attended by a technologist.

Short description: Polysomnography with 1-3 additional parameters.
