1. Indications

The colonic lavage procedure is indicated for patients experiencing chronic, symptomatic constipation that has proven resistant to standard treatments, including stool softeners and other pharmacological therapies. This procedure may be considered when traditional methods fail to provide adequate relief, allowing for a more effective means of clearing the bowel.

2. Procedure

The colonic lavage procedure begins with the preparation of the patient and the necessary equipment. A sterile catheter is carefully inserted into the rectum to facilitate the introduction of water into the colon. Once the catheter is in place, a reservoir containing filtered water is positioned at a height above the patient, utilizing gravity to assist in the flow of water. The procedure involves the gradual infusion of 35 or more liters of water into the colon. As the water flows in, it fills the colon, effectively washing out its contents. The process may also induce defecation, allowing for the expulsion of waste material. Throughout the procedure, the healthcare provider monitors the patient to ensure comfort and effectiveness, adjusting the flow of water as necessary to achieve optimal results.

3. Post-Procedure

After the colonic lavage procedure, patients may experience a sense of relief as the contents of the colon have been effectively cleared. It is important for healthcare providers to monitor the patient for any immediate post-procedure complications or discomfort. Patients may be advised to rest and hydrate adequately following the procedure. Additionally, healthcare providers may discuss follow-up care and potential lifestyle modifications to prevent recurrence of constipation, ensuring that patients have the necessary support for ongoing bowel health.
