1. Indications

The gastrointestinal myoelectrical activity study is indicated for patients presenting with various gastrointestinal symptoms that require further evaluation. The following conditions may warrant this study:

• Abdominal Pain Patients experiencing chronic or unexplained abdominal pain that has not responded to conventional treatments may benefit from this study to assess underlying motility issues.
• Bloating Individuals suffering from persistent bloating can undergo this study to determine if motility dysfunction is contributing to their symptoms.
• Distension Patients with abdominal distension that is not alleviated by standard medical management may require this study to evaluate the motility of the GI tract.
• Change in Bowel Habits Those who have experienced significant changes in their bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation, that are intractable to pharmacological management may be candidates for this study.

2. Procedure

The gastrointestinal myoelectrical activity study involves several key procedural steps to ensure accurate assessment of GI motility. The following steps outline the process:

• Preparation of the Abdomen The skin of the abdomen is thoroughly prepared to ensure proper adhesion of the patches. This may involve cleaning the skin to remove oils and debris that could interfere with the patch's function.
• Application of Patches Specialized patches designed to measure myoelectrical activity are applied to the prepared skin. These patches are strategically placed to cover areas of the abdomen that correspond to the stomach and colon.
• Activation of Battery Power Source Once the patches are in place, the battery power source is activated. This step is crucial as it powers the patches, enabling them to collect and transmit data regarding the myoelectrical activity of the GI tract.
• Remote Monitoring Setup The remote monitoring system is checked to ensure effective communication between the patches and the monitoring application. This step is essential for real-time data collection and analysis.
