Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is a nonprofit cancer treatment and research organization based in Seattle, Washington. The Coding Specialist reviews outpatient facility medical records and assigns diagnosis and procedure codes in accordance with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and related coding guidelines. This role supports reimbursement, documentation improvement, clinical effectiveness, outcome studies, and regulatory reporting.
The position is primarily remote, with a combination of remote and on-site coding noted in the posting. Scheduled hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm PST.
Must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required certifications include RHIT, CCS, CPC, COC, and/or CCS-P.
A minimum of 2 years of outpatient facility abstracting and coding experience is required, including ICD-9, ICD-10, HCPCS, CPT, and facility coding modifiers. Experience may be substituted with a bachelor's degree in Health Informatics or Health Information Management plus the required certification.
Additional requirements include knowledge of insurance plans, LCD/NCDs, medical records, EMR/EHR systems, medical terminology, and anatomy and physiology. Ability to work with clinical professionals is also required.
Preferred qualifications include a bachelor's degree, oncology or transplant coding experience, training experience with clinicians, E&M, surgical and infusion coding, dual/double coding experience, and familiarity with EPIC HB, 3M Encoder, ORCA, and Mindscape.
